Geordie Greep performs The New Sound live in Chicago

Geordie Greep, former frontman of experimental rock group Black Midi, performed his first night of 2 sold out shows in Chicago at The Empty Bottle this Thursday, Jan 30th. Greep's new solo album, The New Sound , was released in October of 2024 and quickly gained praise for it's bold compositions and frenzied melodies, earning a spot on many Best Album of the Year lists.

For achieving The New Sound, Geordie enlisted an incredible ensamble of musicians. The songs are ambitious to say the least, weaving from salsa and samba, jazz, prog rock and blues performed at a blistering speed. Geordie and co took the stage shortly after 10pm and proceeded to blaze through the 13 song set that lasted well over 2 hours. What I saw Thursday night at The Bottle was hands down the best live band I have ever seen.

Greep attained success and notoriety long ago with Black Midi. The band's final studio album Hellfire, offers a glimpse into the inspiration for the songs that would become The New Sound. After seeing it live, it's apparent this is the work of an obsessed and calculated mind. Was Black Midi simply not up to the task? Was there tension between members over creative control? Or was Greep planning on focusing on solo material and taking a hiatus? The members of Black Midi so far have remained tight lipped as to the reason for the break. If The New Sound is any indication of where Geordie Greep is planning on taking us, I'm down for the ride.
